Enhanced Information Needed on Contractor Workplace Safety

Contracts awarded by the Department of Defense can include work that is physically demanding and dangerous, like construction and manufacturing. We found some defense contractors had been cited for safety or health violations. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration doesn’t collect data that could be used to match federal contracts with violations, so it’s not always possible to know whether the violations occurred on defense contracts. Also, DOD doesn’t always require contractors to be rated on safety. We recommended DOD and OSHA improve the use and availability of information about workplace safety for defense contractors. How to combat burnout in cybersecurity

Everyone feels the pressure to perform, work hard and prove their worth. No matter how much you love your job, you can overwork, feel heightened stress that can cause a mental or physical collapse known as “burnout.” Burnout is a phenomenon becoming well-acquainted with modern workers. This is especially true for hyper-active and high-pressure industries like cybersecurity, where mistakes are costly and every moment is hypercritical, these issues are tenfold. In cybersecurity, hyper-vigilance is a state of mind every minute of the day. As the pace of global cybercrime continues to grow, pressure is exacerbated even more by the global cybersecurity skills shortage as demand is outpacing the supply of security professionals who can help combat the ever-increasing threats. Cybersecurity Ventures estimated the total of unfilled security jobs is expected to reach 3.5 million by 2021. So, the question begs asking: In an industry that is constantly growing and full of high-pressure situations, how do you get your organization the help needed to disconnect from work and avoid potential burnout? Identifying burnout Burnout doesn’t just happen overnight, and it won’t be blatantly obvious when it is happening to a team member. But there are a few telltale warning signs that […]

A ‘New Chapter’ in Government Procurement of Satellite Solutions

At the end of 2018, division chief Clare Grason and her entire satellite communications team at the Defense Information Systems Agency moved over to work in the same capacity under Gen. John (“Jay”) Raymond at the Air Force Space Command (AFSPC). As she said of the transfer in November at the Global MilSatCom conference in London, “We’re ready to start a new chapter.” The change has been a long time coming. We industry veterans here at Intelsat General and our colleagues at other commercial satellite providers have been pushing for reform for the past decade. This move is not simply a shuffling of the deck chairs. Rather, it is an important step toward a future wideband SATCOM architecture that defines a clear role for COMSATCOM. Several Air Force leaders, including Gen. John Hyten and Gen. Jay Raymond, have long been advocates for the USG solidifying the COMSATCOM role in the DoD space mission and taking full advantage of commercial capability. Gen. Raymond, in particular, was instrumental in supporting the decision to shift commercial satellite services procurement from DISA to the Air Force, which is also responsible for the nation’s military satellite constellations. As Grason said at Global MilSatCom, she now […]
